Society is dependent on the metals and minerals produced by mines, and the employment that the mines and mineral processing provide. However, at the same time the activities can result in emissions, such as of acid mine drainage with sulphates and heavy metals into waterways. The SEESIMA project aims to raise awareness of technological solutions to environmental impacts of mining activities, in order to reduce environmental impacts and improve economic returns. The project is funded in 2018-2022 by the Kolarctic CBC, EU, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Russia (in the period up to 3 March 2022)

The Kolarctic CBC programme area is shown above, consisting of “Core Areas” in dark green, and “Adjoining Areas” in light green. The SEESIMA project focuses on the implementation of results in these areas, with the further implementation of the project results focusing on the programme area in Finland, Sweden and Norway.
