SEESIMA is a EU Kolarctic Cross-Border Cooperation project with the title “Supporting Environmental, Economic and Social Impacts of Mining Activity”. It was financed between 2018-2022 by the Kolarctic CBC, EU, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Russia (in the period up to March 2022), with partners from the northern regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia (up until March 2022).

Society is dependent on the metals and minerals produced by mines, and the employment that the mines and mineral processing provide. However, at the same time the activities can result in emissions, such as of acid mine drainage with sulphates and heavy metals into waterways. The SEESIMA project aims to raise awareness of technological solutions to environmental impacts of mining activities, in order to reduce environmental impacts and improve economic returns.

The further implementation of the project results is focusing on the Kolarctic programme area in Finland, Sweden and Norway.
